Andy Smith: Commercial Photographer

Posted by Sam Eriksmoen

Two years ago I relocated to London. I was concerned that my site would drop down Google search rankings because London is obviously a very competitive market. A few months ago my site made it on page one of Google searches for five of the keyword phrases I wanted it to appear under. My top listings are: Editorial Photographer London (#1 on Page 1.) Advertising Photographer London (#2 on Page 1.) Commercial Photographer London (#3 on Page 1.) Since I started to appear on page one I’ve received a noticeable increase in inquiries coming through my website. On top of great service, great design, and the ability to update my site in seconds, I know that my liveBooks site is being seen, which is obviously what it is all about.

Before devoting his energies to photography, Andy traveled the world. When I ask him why he decided to become a professional photographer he recalls a defining moment in his travels through India. A scene still sticks in his mind of seeing children washing up in toxic water in the slums of Mumbai; in the background of the image is one of India’s premier 5-star hotels. Seeing this juxtaposition, Andy felt compelled to capture this story and knew that there were more of these stories to be told.

Take a look at Andy Smith’s work and you’ll see that he’s a different kind of photographer. Alongside his lifestyle work, his portfolios are storybooks of real people, often working in unique environments, to provide goods and services that we use everyday. Andy’s most recent project showcases how larger corporations are investing back in the communities where they harvest resources; from funding schools and community programs to planning sustainable resource procurement. From food companies to fashion brands and rubber manufacturers, companies oftentimes have deep supply chains that include small shareholders in developing countries. Many corporations are investing in improving the lives of these people and creating sustainable systems that supplement the resources they harvest. In this time when news about corporations is overwhelmingly negative, it’s important that photographers like Andy tell these stories too. Read more about Andy’s new work and hear more of his stories on his liveBooks website.

What’s not to love about liveBooks? I chose liveBooks because, uploading and managing content is as easy as it gets. Before that, I had a pretty ordinary static site that was a nightmare to keep up to date, taking hours of my precious time to just upload a couple of images. Now new work can be uploaded and tagged within minutes using the well designed, easy to use editSuite. Adding SEO keywords is simple, intuitive and crucial to help search engines find your site. And now with the recent introduction of Scaler, which allows for bigger images that scale to fit the viewer’s monitor, my work has much more impact and is displayed on the web in the best possible way.

Being a designer as well as a photographer, customising and branding my site to ensure consistency with my company identity is essential. The liveBooks support team made implementing my company logo and colour palette effortless.

I’ve been using liveBooks for less than 2 years and in that time my business has increased three-fold! I can’t see myself moving to another website company any time soon.

Michael left Manilla Guerilla in August 2009 to follow his love of photography and also retains a number of design clients.

I chose liveBooks initially because it was the leading provider of portfolio websites and was highly recommended based on its responsive client support. I have found this to be true from my initial contact, and can honestly say that even as the company has expanded and evolved, I have been treated very, very well by liveBooks at all levels – sales, design, and support.

Kristina Gill currently resides in Rome, Italy. Her website has given her the opportunity to highlight her work to different audiences. She uses one of her portfolios in conjunction with a column she edits at DesignSpongeonline.com called ‘In the Kitchen With’. Some of her other work has been selected and sold as fine art prints.

I chose a liveBooks website was because I needed a well designed, intuitive administrative interface that allows me to upload my images from anywhere in the world. The liveBooks editSuite is so easy to use anyone can do it. I wanted to maintain control over the content on my site. With liveBooks I can upload my images as soon as I am done with a shoot – which I love!
Having a custom designed website allowed me to create an online presence that not only incorporated my branding but was a true reflection of who I am. It needed to show my love of travel, adventure and my passion for people and places. My loading bar states “Life is a collection of Experiences” and I feel fortunate to have had so many amazing ones that have come to life in my photos.
I believe that liveBooks’ SEO is going to drive even more traffic to my site. This in conjunction with targeted marketing campaigns will allow me to reach out to both new and existing clients – which I am very excited about!
In my opinion it is important for a website to have a clean layout that is easy to navigate and loads quickly. People have short attention spans these days so you have to make a first impression very quickly. Working with liveBooks was a real pleasure and I would recommend it to anyone looking to launch a new website!

I chose a liveBooks website as it is a very simple, yet effective way to display and promote my portfolio online. I am not a technical person, which is why I needed something user friendly and reliable. I imagine this sounds like a common testimonial but that is the way it is!

When I started looking for a new website I knew I wanted a clean, professional and modern look to make a good first impression on potential clients. Garden design is a very competitive business so the ‘wow factor’ is always a must. When a photographer friend of mine, who already uses liveBooks, recommended them I knew I was headed in the right direction. To me using great images is one of the best ways to showcase my portfolio and since liveBooks offers unlimited portfolios I can show more of my work. The SEO has proven to work remarkably well. Just one week after being live my website is already appearing on the first page in several search engines!

2010 has been a pivotal point in my business and without question I contribute a large proportion of this to the new online presence liveBooks created for me. With enviable customer service and a design team that set the standard working with liveBooks has been one of the ‘the’ best business decisions I’ve made to date. Now having upgraded my site to add in a Vimeo Page is another. The partnership of liveBooks and Vimeo has created the ideal ‘home’ for video; a partnership that works extremely well.
